Dangerous Lorraines DanceTheater
Sacramento’s Dangerous Lorraines DanceTheater creates contemporary theatrical dance works that aren’t so much dangerous as they are unpredictable.
Sacramento State professor and Dangerous Lorraines artistic director and choreographer Melissa Wynn founded the performance group in 2004 and now co-directs the troupe with Sacramento State professor and artistic director and choreographer Lorelei Bayne.
“The Lorraines part is my alter-ego, what goes on in my head,” Wynn says. “The dangerous part is you don’t really know what’s going to come out.”
The group of 15 performers ranging in age from 19 to their 40s incorporates dancers, movers, actors, musicians, photographers and videographers. The mission of the group is to challenge and entertain audiences while pushing artistic limits.
The integration of expressive outlets combined with the performer’s different age groups, makes for an interesting presentation that is “thought provoking, quirky and theatrical,” Wynn says.
“We work through improvisation quite a bit,” Wynn says. “We are interested in the integration aspect; to look at how these bodies can co-exist on the stage.”
Dangerous Lorraines DanceTheater will perform full evening concerts for the Sacramento State Festival of the Arts at 8 p.m., March 14-15, in Solano Hall 1010 that will serve as a preview of the group’s wide range of outlets. The pieces included in the Festival’s performances are works-in-progress that will be presented in its Season Premiere concert in September.
Works-in-progress to be presented at the Festival of the Arts include Black/White, a duet choreographed and performed by co-artistic directors Wynn and Bayne. Connect/Disconnect, a group work directed by Wynn, and The Solo Project, choreographed by Bayne. A post-performance discussion will be held after Friday evening's performance. Tickets are $8 general and $5 for students.
