Community-building conference part
of Women’s History Month

California State University, Sacramento will present a high-profile conference as part of the campus’ ongoing celebration of Women’s History Month at 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Fri., March 4 in the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium. “Women Mentoring Women: Women Building Community,” will unite women students with women from the community who are leaders in their fields.

The much-anticipated event will feature approximately 50 women from the greater Sacramento region who will serve as mentors for students. The mentors will represent a wide range of fields including education, business and industry, politics, social services, sciences, sports and the arts. Mentors and students will spend the day together attending the keynote address by Donnie Bloomingstock, executive director of the American Leadership Forum, and the smaller break out sessions focused on the leadership development and mentoring.

Activities at the daylong event will be split into three segments. The morning will feature separate workshops for students and mentors, with the keynote address by Donnie Bloomingstock closing out the segment. Mid-afternoon will feature a lunchtime panel discussion with panelists Helen Thompson, Yolo county Supervisor; Nancy Wedlick, a recruiter for the FBI; Fantasia Stenlsand, Sacramento State student activist; Laurie Bisset Grady, director of Health Education for Sacramento State; and Rosemary Papa, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning for the University. The afternoon segment will feature small group workshops that will run concurrently. Workshop titles include, “Career Development,” “From College to Community” and “Mentoring Relationships.” As a follow up, mentors will be asked to attend another event on campus during the month with their mentees. The event is sponsored by the University’s Office of the President, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.
