Javanese musicians and dancers to perform
Javanese dancers
California State
University, Sacramento’s department of music and the CSUS World Music
Club present the sounds of Gamelan Sari Raras, a Bay Area-based Javanese
orchestra. The group will accompany Javanese traditional dancers Matheus
Wasi Bantolo and Olivia Retno Widyastuti. The musical event is set for 3
p.m., Sunday, March 14, in the Music Recital Hall in Capistrano Hall.
A gamelan is a large orchestra consisting of bronze gongs and similar percussion
instruments. The music has roots in Indonesia and Malaysia, primarily the areas
of Java and Bali. Organizer and CSUS music professor Jim Chopyak says this
is a rare opportunity to experience Javanese gamelan music and dance at the
University.
Tickets are $12 general admission and $6 for students and available through
the CSUS ticket office at (916) 278-4323 or Tickets.com.
For more information, contact Chopyak at (916) 278-7493. Media assistance is
available from CSUS public affairs at (916) 278-6156.
