Campus events to highlight Women’s History Month

To celebrate Women’s History Month in March, Sacramento State will present a wide range of events that highlight theachievements of women and explore some of the pressing issues facing women today. Events range from a lecture by the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party to a panel discussion on reproductive rights.

The events, which are co-sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and other organizations on campus, are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

The month starts with a talk by Pat Griffin, director of the Education Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Issues in Sport, on March 1 at noon in the University Union Ballroom.

A highlight of the series of events will be a lecture by author Elaine Brown, who led the Black Panther Party in 1974, titled “New Age Racism” on March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom. Tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for students.

Dr. Soheir Stolba, a medical anthropologist, will present a lecture on the voices of Iraqi women on March 7 at 7 p.m. in Mariposa Hall, Room 1001. Stolba, president, CEO and co-founder of the Fair Oaks-based SHARE Institute, recently spent seven weeks in Iraq interviewing Iraqi women.

The International Women’s Day Celebration takes place on March 8 at noon in the Redwood Room of the University Union. The celebration features female performers from the Sacramento Taiko Dan Drummers.

A lecture titled “Beijing Betrayed: An Update on Beijing Plus 10” will be presented by Rhonda Rios Kravitz of the University Library on March 20 at 6 p.m. in the Forest Suite of the University Union.

Cara-Beth Burnside, a member of the first U.S. Olympic snowboarding team in 1998, will deliver a talk on her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated sport on March 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom.

The month ends with a panel discussion on reproductive rights on March 28 at 9 a.m. in Hinde Auditorium followed by a tribute to Coretta Scott King at 10:30 a.m.
