Sacramento Unified superintendent
up next for ‘Breakfast Club’

Sacramento Unified School District Superintendent Maggie Carrillo Mejia will be the next speaker in the Breakfast Club Speakers Series, hosted by the Sacramento State Alumni Association. Mejia will speak at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 8 in the Alumni Center on campus.

The series, which includes breakfast, features a range of guests speaking on hot topics in the Sacramento Region in a low-key, off-the-record format that allows audience interaction.

Mejia will speak on “Positive Changes in Our City Schools." Mejia began her term as Sacramento Unified’s 23 rd superintendent in January 2004 after serving for five years as superintendent of the Montebello Unified School District. While there she worked to raise student performance, increase parent involvement, develop partnerships with local businesses and ensure safe, clean and attractive schools.

She began her career in education with the Sweetwater Union High School District as a classroom teacher, a district-level curriculum specialist and later an assistant principal. She went on to the Anaheim Union High School District as a district curriculum administrator and high school principal, and to Montebello Unified as assistant superintendent before being appointed superintendent in 1999.

Mejia earned her bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in multicultural education from San Diego State University. She received a doctorate in educational policy and administration from the University of Southern California. She has won a number of honors and professional recognition, including Administrator of the Year from the California Association for Bilingual Education, the Milken National Educator of the Year and the LULAC Educator of the Year.

The events are free to Alumni Association members and $15 for non-members. Seating is limited. For reservations or additional information, contact the Alumni Association at (916) 278-6295.
