Professors contribute a breadth of knowledge and encouragement to student academic pursuits, but since 1994, Sacramento State’s faculty has gone above and beyond those duties by investing in their students with the Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarship Awards program.
Six undergraduate and three postbaccalaureate students were honored during a March 20 ceremony in the Hinde Auditorium. Each received a plaque and scholarship made possible by instructors and staff who contribute to the Faculty Endowment fund either through one-time gifts, monthly payroll deduction or by bequests. The nine recipients were selected from 240 applicants, a 65 percent increase from last year, says George Paganelis, chair of the Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarship Awards Committee.
“The scholarship program was established as a means to recognize and reward the best and brightest students on campus—those who receive outstanding letters of recommendation from their professors and have engaged in service on campus or in the community in addition to achieving academic excellence,” Paganelis says.
Eligibility requirements include a 3.5 or higher grade point average, and placement in the top 10 percent of students in their major. Those who met the requirements were invited to apply for the scholarship.
While the criteria to receive an invitation to apply seems challenging for students, selecting nine recipients out of 240 applicants was even more difficult for faculty.
“For me, the most important criteria are academic excellence and service to campus and civic communities. Other members weighted the qualities differently, but I can honestly say that this committee had long and difficult discussions as we narrowed our pool of candidates,” English professor and Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarship Awards Committee member Hellen Lee-Keller says.
Each recipient expressed gratitude for being considered and selected for the scholarship which reimburses their semester tuition and fees. But for some, the award was more than just recognition of hard work and academic achievements.
“I’ve never really won a scholarship before, but paying for the last year and a half of school on my own, it’s been really rough, and actually winning this scholarship is really going to help out,” says Jesse Manton, Business major.
Recipients were also thankful for their educational experience at Sacramento State.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but I received valuable training at Sac State,” geology major Rebecca Tsang says. “I’m truly grateful for my experience here.”
