Bee Reporter Talks at CSUS About Hmong Community
"Hmong Community: Orphans of History,"
a program in honor of Asian Pacific Heritage Week, will feature
a talk by Sacramento Bee reporter Stephen Magagnini at noon,
Monday, April 2 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium at
California State University, Sacramento.
In September, the Bee published a series about Hmong refugees
living in Sacramento authored by Magagnini, who has covered
ethnic affairs and race relations for the newspaper since
In March, Magagnini's series on the tough assimilation of
Hmong refugees in Sacramento won an award for distinguished
writing about diversity from the American Society of Newspaper
"Magagnini's extraordinary stories deliver a remarkable,
caring insight into the inner workings and humanity of this
culture," wrote the panel of top newspaper editors who
selected "Orphans of History" to receive the award.
In 2000-01, Magagnini was honored by the Columbia Journalism
School for his coverage of race and ethnicity in America,
making him the first reporter to receive that prize two years
in a row.
