Bridging Diversity Via Arts Dialogue

At noon, Tuesday, April 3, saxophonist Fred Ho and performance poet Kalamu ya Salaam will collaborate for an "Afro-Asian Arts Dialogue: Building Alliances in an Age of Divide and Conquer," concert in the University Union Redwood Room at California State University, Sacramento.

Through performance, the duo plans to engage the audience in a discussion about the political, cultural and historical commonalities between Asian Americans and African Americans.

Ho, an internationally renowned baritone saxophonist and bandleader, is the director of the Afro-Asian Music Ensemble. He has worked with such noted musicians as Charlie Persip, Archie Shepp and Sunny Murray. Ho has received numerous awards and fellowships including the Duke Ellington Distinguished Artist Lifetime Achievement Award.

Salaam is the author of seven books of poetry and served as the editor of The Black Collegian Magazine for 13 years. He produces festivals, poetry events and theater throughout the country. Salaam was a recent recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Awards for excellence in writing about music.
