CSUS Students Sweep
Regional Awards Competition
More than 140 interior design students
from colleges throughout California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon
and Washington competed in the recent Student Career Forum
Design Competition held in San Francisco and California State
University, Sacramento students dominated the event by winning
three out of the five first place awards.
The first place winners from CSUS are Kelley Morrison, Sindy
Park and Michie Schmitz, who worked closely on their projects
with CSUS design professors Jim Kenney and Jill Pable.
Morrison's winning design concept was based on converting
a conventional existing home into a residence that would accommodate
the changing needs of its occupants as they grew older. Her
design included water sculptors, custom fireplaces and many
natural colors.
Park's received a first place award for her barrier-free residential
bathroom design. Replete with ambient lighting and close attention
to Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, Park's bathroom
concept was a standout submission to the judges.
Schmitz was given top honors for her kitchen design that incorporated
edge-illuminated glass countertops, wood detailing and a creative
space plan.
Additionally, CSUS students Erica Blue received a second-place
award and Angela Elkins was given an honorable mention award.
