Free screening helps students
assess their alcohol use
The Student Health Center at California
State University, Sacramento will offer free alcohol screening
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11 in the University
Union lobby.
As part of National Alcohol Screening Day, CSUS students can
learn how alcohol can affect their lives by completing a brief,
written screening test. They will also receive educational
information and talk one-on-one with a health professional.
Most students do not abuse alcohol, but those who do pose
serious problems for the campus community and for themselves,
says health education assistant Cyndra Krogen. Alcohol is
frequently a factor in the three leading causes of death for
15- to 24-year-olds: motor vehicle crashes, homicides and
suicides.
She also notes that students who binge drink - consume five
or more drinks in a row for males or four or more drinks in
a row for females - are more likely to damage property, have
trouble with authorities, miss classes and experience injuries.
Binge drinkers also engage in more unplanned sexual activity
and abandon safe sex techniques more often than students who
do not binge drink.
