Russian songs resonate at CSUS
California State University, Sacramento
vocal professor Marla Volovna shares her passion for Russian
music at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at the Music Recital
Hall in Capistrano Hall.
The concert is part of the University's 10th annual Festival
of the Arts.
Volovna will perform selections from such popular Russian
composers as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and M. Glinka.
"I feel a special affinity for Russian music. I love
it," says Volovna. "And with this recital I wanted
to do something completely new, songs I've never done before."
Volovna says that many Russian pieces are heavy and sad, so
she sought out contrasting songs for her performance.
"I have found some exquisite pieces," says Volovna.
"A contrast that will allow the audience to experience
a variety of feelings, not just the suffering that a good
deal of Russian music conveys."
Volovna studied voice for 15 years throughout Europe in Germany,
Italy and France. She has taught voice at CSUS for the past
seven years.
