Sheley appointed executive vice president

interim executive vice president. The appointment is effective June 1.
Joseph Sheley
In his new position, Sheley will assist President Alexander Gonzalez in overseeing
the day-to-day operations of the University. He will also direct various special
projects, including development of the Placer Campus and coordination of the
ambitious Destination 2010 initiative to transform Sacramento State into a
premier metropolitan university.
"Joe Sheley has proven himself to be a remarkable leader and asset for this
University," President Gonzalez said. "He's able to build consensus and inspire
people, and I'm confident he'll play an important part in improving Sacramento
State."
Sheley's work will allow President Gonzalez to commit additional time to development
and community relations, which he considers vital to fulfilling the goals of
Destination 2010.
Sheley has been serving as both dean and interim director of Alumni Relations
since last summer. He conceived Sacramento State's annual celebration of April
as Alumni Month, and is broadly credited with strengthening the campus focus
on maintaining strong ties with alumni.
Sheley will continue as dean and assist with Alumni Relations during the transition.
Sheley is twice a graduate of Sacramento State. He earned a bachelor's degree
in social science and a master's degree in sociology here before going on to
complete his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts.
Prior to returning to Sacramento State, he taught in and served as chair of
the Department of Sociology at Tulane University. While with Tulane he also
served as the academic program administrator for the HUD Campus Affiliates
Program and was a Mellon Foundation Fellow and visiting lecturer in Cali, Colombia.
In 1996 he returned to his alma mater as dean.
Sheley's academic and research interests stretch across the fields of criminology
and sociology, and include specific areas such as social control, criminal
justice policy, sociology of law, medical sociology, cross-cultural health
and violence research.
