Omicron Chapter’s 20th anniversary a
celebration of an honorable history

Sacramento State has many reasons to feel honored as it marks the 20th anniversary of Omicron, the University’s chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars. Phi Beta Delta is the nation’s first honor society dedicated to recognizing individuals who have demonstrated scholarly achievement in the areas of international education and exchange.

At the annual Phi Beta Delta national conference, March 27 – 31 in San Antonio, Texas, Sacramento State’s Omicron Chapter members received significant recognition for their work.

Professor Thomas Knutson, Communications Studies, is the 2007 recipient of the Society’s Faculty Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Education. Knutson is a past President of Phi Beta Delta.  Janis Silvers, study abroad advisor in Global Education and an officer for the Omicron Chapter, won the Edward S. Blankenship Leadership and Service Award.  The same award was won in 1997 by Monica Freeman, coordinator of International Programs at Sacramento State and long-time member of the Society’s Board of Directors.  This year, Freeman was named President-Elect of Phi Beta Delta.

Also at this year’s conference, Professor Jim Chopyak, Department of Music, presented a paper on “Islamic Fundamentalism, Change, and Music in Malaysia.” Professor Catherine Turrill, Department of Art, was elected Regional Vice-President for the West, the branch of Phi Beta Delta to which western and southwestern universities belong.

Established in 1987, Sacramento State’s Omicron Chapter hosts a reception for international research scholars each semester and raises funds for scholarships for international study, among other activities. Sacramento State is a two-time winner of Phi Beta Delta’s Outstanding Chapter Award.

As part of its fund-raising activities this semester, the Omicron Chapter is sponsoring a souvenir sale and silent auction at the Study Abroad Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.on Wednesday, April 18 in the Library Quad.  The sale will feature a variety of items that Chapter members have acquired on trips abroad.
