Professors who make a difference honored at Sac State

Sacramento State is honoring faculty members who make their mark in the lives of students, community and University members at this year’s annual Outstanding Teaching, University and Community Service Awards event, 3-5 p.m., Tuesday, April 22 in the University Union Ballroom.

“This ceremony is an affirmation of the importance of teaching and the role our faculty members play as professors, in the governance of the University and the application of their knowledge and skills in addressing community needs,” says Bruce Bikle, chair of the Faculty Senate.

The Outstanding Teaching Award is given to one faculty member in each of the University’s Colleges and the Library. Recipients are honored for their teaching effectiveness and their impact on the lives and careers of their students. Recipients are:
• Matthew McCormick, philosophy, College of Arts and Letters;
• Laura Riolli, management, College of Business Administration;
• Marielle Brandt, counselor education, College of Education;
• Perry Heedley, electrical and electronic engineering, College of Engineering and Computer Science;
• Michael Wright, kinesiology and health science, College of Health and Human Services;
• Tim Horner, geology, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics;
• Rachel August, psychology, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies; and
• Reza Peigahi, Library

The Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service is given to one faculty member each year to recognize extraordinary commitment over the long term and significant, enduring contributions to the greater community for a decade or more. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service is awarded to Annita Watson, from the College of Health and Human Services.

The Outstanding Community Service Awards recognize the faculty’s community engagement throughout the Sacramento region and the contributions they make in adding to the public good. Recipients include:
• Jana Noel, teacher education, College of Education;
• Beth Kivel, recreation, parks and tourism administration, College of Health and Human Services; and
• Rebecca Cameron, psychology, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies

The University Service Awards honor faculty for their participation in the governance of the University as members or chairs of committees, for their efforts in curriculum development, advising or special assignments at the department, College and University level. Recipients are:
• Val Smith, communication studies, College of Arts and Letters;
• Akihiko Kumagai, mechanical engineering, College of Engineering and Computer Science;
• Katherine Pinch, recreation, parks and tourism administration, College of Health and Human Services;
• Peter Urone, physics and astronomy, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and
• James Sobredo, ethnic studies, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies
