Cuba comes alive in one-day photo exhibit

Cuba, a land so close to the United States yet so far away, will be the focus of an exclusive, one-day show of photographic works by Roberto Salas, who along with his father Osvaldo has chronicled Cuba from Castro to Che to the present day. The show runs from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 8 on the first floor of Napa Hall at California State University, Sacramento. A reception will begin at 6 p.m.

“Cuba! A Photographic Retrospective” features more than 40 photos, the majority by Roberto, who will be present at the show, and six by his father. Included are images of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara from the 1950s and a large body of work depicting life in Cuba as seen through the lens of Roberto. The work spans five decades and also includes photos from Vietnam made by Roberto in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Four large color mosaic images by Roberto illustrate the new direction his art is taking.

Roberto Salas

Born in New York in 1940, Roberto Salas and his Cuban-born father were invited to Cuba by Castro in 1955 to work for the government newspaper Revolución. The pair were granted nearly unfettered access to revolutionary figures and events, and created an unparalleled photographic history of the times. The pair collaborated until Osvaldo’s death in 1992. Roberto currently lives and works in Cuba, continuing to chronicle and create.
