The Sacramento Ballet's final show of
the season, "Modern Masters," will be performed
at California State University, Sacramento at 7:30 p.m., May
2 and 8 p.m., May 3 - 4. There will also be at 2 p.m., Sunday
matinee, May 5.
"Modern Masters," is a collection of cutting edge
works including world premiere choreography by Val Caniparoli,
resident choreographer of the San Fransico Ballet, with music
by Giuseppe Tartini.
Caniparoli has had a multi-faceted career as a principal dancer,
character actor and choreographer for ballet, opera and multi-media
productions. His work has been highly praised from critics
and audiences alike from Paris to New York to Tokyo. He is
the recipient of ten National Endowment Fellowships, a California
Artist's Fellowship and Dance Bay Area acknowledged his contribution
to dance by honoring him with an award for Sustained Achievement
in Choreography.
In addition this world premiere, the riveting collection of
dance works also features a satire of classical ballet with
original choreography by Amy Seiwart and a piece by David
Parsons about a mythical creature's struggle and eventual
extinction at the hands of a hunter. Juxtaposing Parson's
somewhat darker piece is Dale Scholl's "Bird," an
evocative jazz work set to the music of the blues legend Charlie
Parker.
In addition to the four shows, on Tuesday, April 30 a free
performance by the Sacramento Ballet starts at noon in the
University Theatre in Shasta Hall, and from 3 to 4 p.m., co-artistic
director Ron Cunningham will teach a free master class for
student dancers in Yosemite 187.
