Sacramento State communication campaign targets budget cuts

The Alliance for the CSU will make it easier for opponents of the governor’s proposed higher-education budget cuts to contact the state’s decision-makers.

Faculty, students, staff and the community will have the opportunity to gather at two locations on the Sacramento State campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, May 1. The Alliance is encouraging opponents of the proposed budget cuts to call, fax and e-mail their comments to the governor, legislators and other policy-makers.

Communication stations will be set up at the University’s Library quad and River Front Center to collect faxes and provide information on the proposed cuts. Participants will find fax forms to fill out and cell phones they can use to call state officials and leave messages for them.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger initially proposed slashing $386 million across the California State University system as part of his plan to reduce the state’s deficit in the 2008-09 fiscal year.

CSU students, administrators, faculty and staff quickly responded by forming the Alliance in a grassroots effort to oppose the cuts.

Sacramento State’s UBAC, University Budget Advisory Committee, also is working to minimize the specific impacts to the Sacramento campus.

CSU and Sacramento State officials have repeatedly emphasized the effects such cuts would have on student fees, admissions and class sizes, and the ripple effect that would have on the future of California’s workforce.
