Senior dance students to put on ‘fierce’ show
Seniors from Sacramento State’s Department of Theatre and Dance will showcase a dynamic assortment of dance styles from ballet and tango to African-Caribbean and hip-hop in this year’s senior dance concert. The performance, Something Fierce, opens 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 at the DanceSpace Theater in Solano Hall 1010. It continues nightly at 8 p.m. until Sunday, May 7 with a show at 2 p.m.
The concert is choreographed by nine senior dance students who will present an eclectic mix of 11 pieces using 50 student performers from a variety of majors. Music from diverse genres will set the mood for each dance with music from John Cage, Christina Aguilera, Cirque du Soleil and more.
“There’s something fierce about each dance, whether it be subtle or out there,” said director Professor Lorelei Bayne.
Bayne said the concert will feature two pieces choreographed by students Roxanne Payan and Sarah Henshaw, which were performed at the American College Dance Festival hosted by Sacramento State in March. More than 450 students and faculty nationwide attended the festival.
One of the dances performed at the festival, “Tribute,” is a dream-like piece which tells the story of a woman who is lost in a world of different dance styles, said Bayne. The other dance, “Double-Sided,” has an abstract feel, where three performers dance with large wooden boxes.
Bayne said this year’s concert will feature one of the largest graduating classes to date. A question and answer session will precede Thursday’s concert, where senior dance students will discuss how the various dances were created.
Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for Sacramento State students and staff and $10 for seniors and high school students. For ticket information, call the Sacramento State Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323. For media assistance, contact the Public Affairs Office at (916) 278-6156.
