Campus mourns loss of student Kebret Tekle

The Sacramento State community is mourning the death of student Kebret Tekle, who was fatally injured early Wednesday morning, May 2.

Tekle was a 20-year-old sophomore who had been enrolled at Sacramento State since Fall 2004. She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and a committee chair for the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

She graduated from Logan High School in Union City, Calif.

Tekle is described by the Sacramento Police Department as an innocent bystander who was shot at approximately 1 a.m. as she was sitting in a car near the Library Eats and Drinks Night Club at 7042 Folsom Blvd. Police say there was a dispute in the club that escalated in the parking lot where several shots were fired.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends. This is terribly tragic,” said Lori Varlotta, the University’s Vice President for Student Affairs. “Of course this is a very difficult time for many of our students, and we are doing all we can to support them.”

Campus counselors offered support for students, faculty and staff throughout the day yesterday and into today. Students seeking assistance may contact the Psychological Counseling Center at (916) 278-6416, while staff may contact the Employee Assistance Program (916) 278-5018.

The suspect in the shooting, who fled in the direction of 65th Street following the shooting, is still being sought. The campus community is asked to be alert to their surroundings and immediately report suspicious activities to University Police.

Anyone with information should contact the Sacramento Police Department at (916) 264-5471 or the University Police Department at (916) 278-6851.
