Campus to open newest building
The latest in the
expansion effort underway at California State University, Sacramento will be
on display Tuesday, May 11 when the campus’ new building – Modoc
Hall – opens. The 85,000 square-foot building at the south end of campus
is a joint project of the University and the U. S. Geological Survey. CSUS President
Alexander Gonzalez and USGS Director Charles Groat will dedicate the building
during a private ceremony at 10:30 a.m. A public reception, open house and building
tours will follow from 11:30 to 3 p.m.
The day concludes with the University’s annual Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award lecture by engineering professor Jose Granda at 4 p.m. on the first floor of Modoc. A reception will follow from 5 to 6 p.m.
The new space represents a major boost for the University’s research efforts, increasing student access to first-hand research with working scientists. Building on a successful relationship established with the construction of Placer Hall in 1996, Modoc Hall will bring additional offices of the U.S Geological Survey to campus. The building will also house the University’s Office of Water Programs offices and labs along with campus offices that coordinate funding and processing for research projects.
“Modoc Hall is a perfect example of what can happen when agencies work together,” says CSUS President Alexander Gonzalez. “The University’s partnership with the USGS brings opportunities to our students that they wouldn’t get anywhere else, opportunities to work side-by-side with USGS scientists to solve challenges facing the West.”
The University’s Office of Water Programs, a research and training endeavor that looks for solutions to California’s water problems, will gain expanded facilities in the new building. In addition to providing courses in water treatment to busy professionals, the office’s stormwater research group works with agencies such as CalTrans on issues relating to runoff.
The building is located near the campus’ Folsom Blvd. entrance. More information and media assistance is available by contacting the CSUS public affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
