Popular Folk Music Tunes Up at CSUS

Experience the past, the present and the future simultaneously at a free concert at noon, Friday, May 11 at California State University, Sacramento.

The internationally acclaimed band Mono Blanco will perform the traditional music and dance of southern Veracruz, Mexico, known as son jarocho. The group combines traditional son jarocho elements with modern improvisation techniques, updating the folk genre in engaging fashion while cultivating its unique roots.

Mono Blanco's artistic director Gilberto Gutierrez has received numerous scholarships including the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Art award and the Rockefeller Fund for Culture to develop projects that promote son jarocho.

Formed in 1980, Mono Blanco's members consist of families from the rural areas surrounding Veracruz. The group has toured throughout Asia, Europe, Central America, Mexico and the United States.
