Popular Folk Music Tunes Up at CSUS
Experience the past, the present and
the future simultaneously at a free concert at noon, Friday,
May 11 at California State University, Sacramento.
The internationally acclaimed band Mono Blanco will perform
the traditional music and dance of southern Veracruz, Mexico,
known as son jarocho. The group combines traditional son jarocho
elements with modern improvisation techniques, updating the
folk genre in engaging fashion while cultivating its unique
roots.
Mono Blanco's artistic director Gilberto Gutierrez has received
numerous scholarships including the National Endowment for
the Arts Folk Art award and the Rockefeller Fund for Culture
to develop projects that promote son jarocho.
Formed in 1980, Mono Blanco's members consist of families
from the rural areas surrounding Veracruz. The group has toured
throughout Asia, Europe, Central America, Mexico and the United
States.
