“Pops” goes the fun:
concert series stops by campus
Along with barbeques and swimming, the annual “Pops
in the Park” concert series is a Sacramento summertime staple. The free
evening concert series, now in its 15th year, features a string of bands. All
shows are set for 6 p.m., June 4 to July 9, with popular band Funkengruven playing
at 6 p.m., Saturday, June 18 in Sacramento State’s Library Quad.
Funkengruven is a homage to the music of the 1970s. The band’s funky fashion
sense and dynamic stage presence has made it an area favorite, winning the Sacramento
Music “Sammie” Award for “Best R&B Band” in 1999,
2000 and 2001. Funkengruven was also inducted into Sammies’ Hall of Fame
in 2002.
Other acts to perform at various locations around Sacramento will be three-time
Sammie award-winners Bucho!, country-western band the California Cowboys, big
band act the Bill Rase Orchestra and San Francisco party band The Pulsators.
A full schedule for the series is available at (916) 808-5240.
Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at all concerts and vendors
include Burr’s Fountain, Sacramento Catering, Bogle Vineyards and Gordon
Biersch. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to beautification projects
at area parks.
The series is co-sponsored by Sacramento State, city councilman Steve Cohn,
Blue Diamond Almond Growers, Capital Power Credit Union, East Sacramento Chamber
of Congress, Lumen’s Light and Living, and Sutter Health.
