Sacramento State lands NEA grant,
seeks participants for summer program

A Sacramento State summer arts program for K-12 teachers has been selected to receive a new National Endowment for the Arts Teacher Institute Awards grant.

The University’s Summer Arts Institute was one of only 12 programs nationally to receive funding under the NEA initiative. The institutes are designed to immerse participants in the study of an “anchor work” of art. Sacramento State’s institute will focus on Aaron Copland’s “Portrait of Lincoln.” As part of the institute, participants will develop a standards-based curriculum unit to pilot test with their students in the fall.

Crystal Olson, teacher education professor, says the institute is designed to “counter the trend in arts curriculum that is a mile wide and an inch deep with a curriculum that is a mile deep and an inch wide.”

The College of Education is now accepting applications for the institute, which will provide training for 30 teachers. It will be held June 25-29 at the Crocker Art Museum followed by a curriculum development workshop Aug. 2-4 on campus. Participants will receive a $650 scholarship, workshop tuition, and five units of continuing education credit.

The $40,000 NEA grant was matched by a gift from KD Kurutz and Jill Pease of the California Consultancy for Arts Education.
