NCAA Championships return to campus
Sacramento State will again host the 2005 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and
Field Championships, to be held June 8-11 at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Sacramento has been chosen by the NCAA committee to host the championships
in 2005, 2006 and 2007. It is the first time since 1945 the NCAA has chosen
to hold the meet at the same site in successive years.
The meet follows on the heels of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials,
where Sacramento State played host for the second time. The University also
hosted the NCAA meet in 2003, which attracted more than 30,000 fans during
the four-day competition.
More than 1,000 athletes will compete in Sacramento in June, including several
U.S. Olympians. The list of Olympians that are eligible to compete in this
year’s NCAA meet include Jonathan Johnson of Texas Tech (800 meters), Darold
Williamson of Baylor (400), Bennie Brazell of LSU (400 hurdles), Monique Henderson
of UCLA (400) and Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech (high jump).
Four-day tickets for the NCAA Championships are priced between $25-65, and
are available at www.tickets.com or by calling (916) 566-6560. Volunteer applications
are available at the Sacramento Sports Commission website at www.sacsports.com.
