Interim dean selected for College of Education
California State University, Sacramento
President Donald R. Gerth today announced the appointment
of Michael Lewis as dean for the College of Education on an
interim basis. The appointment is effective on July 1, although
he will begin engaging in work at the College level immediately.
Lewis has a doctorate in special education and a master's
degree in special education of the emotionally handicapped
from Columbia University; a master's degree in special education
of the emotionally handicapped from Teachers College, Columbia
University; and a bachelor's degree in English from Cornell
University.
Lewis has many years of experience on the faculties of California
State University, Sacramento and Teachers College, Columbia
University. His initial appointment as a faculty member at
CSUS was in 1981. Since then he has served as professor and
for 12 years as department chair for special education, rehabilitation
and school psychology, as well as special projects coordinator
in the College. Currently he is the director of the California
State University Subject Matter Study.
He has worked closely with the campus community to put "Year
Round Operations" in place. As department chair he worked
with faculty, staff and community partners in the redesign
and re-accreditation of special education programs that involved
working with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. He was
instrumental in establishing the first tenure track position
in American Sign Language Studies. He is published in the
areas of intercultural competence, behavior disorders and
career education.
Professor Lewis has served as chapter president for the Council
for Exceptional Children and president of the California Association
of Professors of Special Education. Lewis has served on an
advisory committee for the Certificate Program/Learning Disability
Specialists for the California Community Colleges and on a
task force on Recruitment and Retention in Special Education
for the California Department of Education.
