Sacramento State helps honor reading achievement

Books with appleStudents at Will C. Wood Middle School read more than 15,000 books this school year, and Sacramento State will honor that achievement during the Family Celebration of Literacy at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 6, at the middle school.

This is the third such celebration honoring the reading achievements and commitment of Will C. Wood students. The evening will include comments by Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez and University provost Joseph Sheley, along with Will C. Wood principal James Wong and Sacramento State ethnic studies professor Greg Mark.

The Celebration of Literacy is part of the 65th Street Corridor Community Collaborative Project that places University student tutors in Will C. Wood classrooms and sponsors student and parent field trips to Sacramento State.

In addition to the awards, Friday’s free celebration will include live music, dinner and a book giveaway. Collectively, 200 of Will C. Wood’s students read more than 1 million words. Another 300 students read more than 500,000 words and 500 students surpassed the national average of 250,000 words.

Will C. Wood Middle School is located at 6201 Lemon Hill Avenue. For more information on the celebration and the collaborative project, call Mark at (916) 278-3783. For media assistance, call Sacramento State’s Public Affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
