Harry Shearer hosts Fellows anniversary

The Center for California Studies and the Capital Fellows Programs are celebrating a number of anniversaries Friday night with a special guest, actor Harry Shearer. The star of This is Spinal Tap, and A Mighty Wind, and voice of many characters on The Simpsons, hosts the 50th anniversary Capital Fellows Celebration at 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 8, at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria at 828 I Street in Sacramento.

The Fellows program has served as a vital path to state service for women, people of color, and other under-represented groups.

The event will mark the 25th anniversary of the Center for California Studies, the home of the Assembly and Senate programs since 1984, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Assembly Fellowship program, the 35th anniversary of the Senate Fellows, the 22nd of the Executive and the 10th of the Judicial Administration Fellowship program.

More than 1,300 men and women have served as Capital Fellows in the last 50 years. Alumni include three members of Congress, four state legislators, and two members of the State Board of Equalization.

“The Center, Sacramento State, the Fellows programs and our partners in California government should all be proud of the accomplishments over the last half century,” says Center Executive Director Timothy Hodson.

Shearer was involved with the program from 1965 to 1966 as an Assembly Fellow.

“Harry Shearer is the ideal host for the event,” says Hodson, noting the actor’s talent for political satire. “He represents a reunion, commemoration and fun.”

Interviews with Shearer may be arranged through Patty Freedman at patty@aefpr.com. Reporters interested in attending the event may call (916) 278-6906 to reserve a place. The event has already sold out to 400 attendees.
