California State University, Sacramento Library will present a free five-film series focused on the Olympics starting at 7 p.m., Monday, June 14 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium. The first screening will be part one of Olympia, director Leni Riefenstahl’s controversial film chronicling the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. The screening will include commentary by CSUS humanities and religious studies professor Phil DiMare.

The series is being presented by the University Library as part of the CSUS Showcase, a compelling series of campuswide exhibits, performances, concerts, lectures and displays to complement the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at the University July 9 to 18.

The second film will be The Jesse Owens Story at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, in the University Union Hinde Auditorium followed by Chariots of Fire at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, July 15, in the same location. The Jesse Owens Story follows the life of the black athlete who won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Chariots of Fire is a fictional account based on a true story of two British runners vying for gold in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. The film won four Academy Awards in 1982 including best picture.

Also scheduled is The First Olympics about the ancient Olympic games in Greece. The film will be screened continuously in the Library on Friday, July 9 to coincide with the Olympic Trials Opening at CSUS. The critically acclaimed Tokyo Olympiad, on the 1964 Olympic Games, will be shown in September. All presentations will include commentary by University experts.
