Students at Will C. Wood Middle School read more than 15,000 books this school year, and Sacramento State helped honor that achievement and the students’ principal at the school’s Family Celebration of Literacy on June 6.

This was the third such celebration honoring the reading achievements and commitment of Will C. Wood students.

The Celebration of Literacy is part of the 65th Street Corridor Community Collaborative Project that places University student tutors in Will C. Wood classrooms and sponsors student and parent field trips to Sacramento State.

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez helped honor Will C. Wood principal James Wong for his commitment to the literacy program and the partnership. Also on hand for the celebration were University provost Joseph Sheley, dean Otis L. Scott, ethnic studies professor Greg Mark, and many other representatives from Sacramento State, Will C. Wood Middle School, and the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Collectively, 200 of Will C. Wood’s students read more than one million words. Another 300 students read more than 500,000 words and 500 students surpassed the national average of 250,000 words.

For more information on the collaborative project, call Mark at (916) 278-3783. For media assistance, call Sacramento State’s Public Affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
