What Price Liberty? to be Scholl’s swan song

Dale Scholl Dance/Art
will present a reprise of its hit 2003 season-opener What Price Liberty?
in what will be its last show under the direction of retiring California State
University, Sacramento professor Dale Scholl. The performances start at 8 p.m.,
Thursday, July 15 in the University Theatre and continue at 8 p.m. on July 16
and 17.
Scholl will be leaving the university after 27 years of service as a professor
of dance, choreographer and, since 1982, director of the dance company that
bears her name.
What Price Liberty? is part of the CSUS Showcase, a compelling series
of campuswide exhibits, performances, concerts, lectures and displays to complement
the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at the University
July 9 to 18.
The show springs from the minds of five choreographers inspired by the songs,
poetry, letters and speeches of the Civil War, the World Wars and the Vietnam
War. Choreographers Joseph Candelaria, Lisa Ross, Dale Scholl, Nolan T’Sani
and Eric Vianelle paint the stage with music and movement in a commentary on
the emotional and psychological costs of war.
The evening opens with T’Sani’s “Sad and Lonely Weeping,”
a series of dances set to popular tunes from the Civil War. Candelaria’s
“‘Til The Boys Come Home” follows, its dancers backed by music
from World War I with Bela Bartok’s “String Quartet No. 2”
acting as counterpoint. Scholl’s biographic tale of her mother’s
World War II romance is next. “Mission Accomplished” is set to popular
music from the era, including “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by the Andrews
Sisters and “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Frank Sinatra.
The show closes with a two-part piece by Vianelle and Ross focused on America’s
involvement in Vietnam. Vianelle’s “Too Late My Brother” chronicles
the divisiveness at home, and is set to popular protest tunes. Ross’ “Waist
Deep In The Big Muddy,” set to period rock songs, is inspired by her father’s
experiences as a soldier in Vietnam.
Tickets are $18 general, $16 for students and seniors, $15 for CSUS students
