Kids learn healthy lifestyle habits at camp
A series of free day camps called “Project: Healthy
Kids” will be held for children at-risk for diabetes, teaching them ways
to eat right and stay fit. The program is sponsored by the Sacramento State
nursing program.
All camps will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The first
camp is from June 20 to June 24, at the Oak Park Community Center, 3425 Martin
Luther King Blvd. Another camp will be offered from June 27 to July 1 at the
Robertson Community Center in Del Paso Heights, 3525 Norwood Ave. A third camp
will be from July 18 to July 22 at the Galt Community Center in Galt, 1000 Walnut
Ave.
The five-day camps for 5- to 10-year-olds offer learning activities, games and
fitness classes promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
“This camp makes kids aware of better eating habits, which they may not
learn about unless they’re taught,” says Sacramento State’s
Nancy Beers, coordinator of volunteers for the program. The program involves
60 nursing students who have created the curriculum, made grants for the project,
produced marketing strategies and will be working at the camps. Students will
perform follow-up research with participating students to evaluate the program’s
effectiveness.
The program is a partnership of the Sacramento State Division of Nursing, Health
Net of California, and the Community Resources Project WIC (Women, Infants,
Children).
Children may need a doctor’s referral to participate in the free program.
