WAVE Camp to make big splash this summer

Summer is here and Sacramento State is once again hosting the annual Water Adventures in Varied Environments Camp. Designed for kids and young adults with disabilities, WAVE is intended to encourage and provide these youth with the skills and confidence needed to actively participate in outdoor and water sports. WAVE 2005 sessions will be held July 18-22 and July 24-28.

During these two sessions this summer, thrill seekers aged 10-25 will take part in fun summertime activities such as swimming, sailing, water-skiing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and for the first time, scuba diving. The camp takes full advantage of the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Rancho Cordova as well as the campus aquatic facilities.

WAVE Camp offers fun and energetic ways for participants with disabilities like spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and muscular dystrophy to experience water sports in a manner that they seldom do. The camp also provides a great social setting and inspires healthy lifestyle, outside the boundaries of camp life.

The water adventures are supplemented with the overnight experience as campers are invited to stay in the residence halls at Sacramento State. There the traditional camp experience will be completed with night-time entertainment including games, skits, singing and dancing.

Several Sacramento State students and volunteers will also be on hand to assist and supervise the excitement, while experienced WAVE staff members organize and coordinate the activities.

WAVE was created in 1999 by Sacramento State kinesiology professor Scott Modell.

"The transformation that these kids go through is the most impressive thing about it," says Modell. "Many campers are shy and a little nervous at first, but by the time they leave they're much more outgoing and confident in their abilities."

The camp has been an overwhelming success and has sold out every summer including this one. There is a waiting list however, and names can be added by contacting Jenny Yarrow at (916)277-6017.
