University conference is all write for aspiring authors

Sacramento State is once again providing an opportunity for writers to sharpen their skills, explore new genres and learn publishing tips from industry insiders at the Summer Writers’ Conference, presented by the College of Continuing Education Aug. 10-12. The event will feature presentations from nationally renowned authors, workshops on a variety of topics including fiction, playwriting, poetry and biography, and opportunities for individual critiques from workshop leaders.

Keynote speakers for the conference are Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (whose works include The Legend of Fire Horse Woman and the award-winning Farewell to Manzanar), and Raymond Obstfeld (On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance).

The conference workshop will feature sessions such as “Screenwriting: How to Figure Out What Will Happen Next,” “Fiction: Seventeen Secrets of a Writing Professional,” and “Publishing: Are You Sabotaging Your Writing Career?”

Lunch breaks will include Sacramento area writers’ groups, which will allow writers to establish contacts with or join ongoing writing circles. Evening readings on each day of the conference are free and open to the general public.

The registration fee is $245 on or before July 21. After July 21, the registration fee increases to $285. To register, call Sacramento  State’s College of Continuing Education at (916) 278-4433 or visit
