Sheley appointed alumni relations director
Joseph Sheley,
twice a graduate of California State University, Sacramento, will add interim
director of alumni relations and executive director of the CSUS Alumni Association
to his current duties as dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary
Studies beginning Aug. 1, CSUS President Alexander Gonzalez announced today.
Dean Sheley will remain in both roles until a permanent alumni director is named.

relations director Steve Black will move to university advancement as a field
officer for major gifts.
At CSUS Sheley received his bachelor’s degree in social science and a
master’s degree in sociology. He then earned his doctoral degree at the
University of Massachusetts.
Prior to returning to CSUS, he taught and served as chair of the department
of sociology at Tulane University. While with Tulane he also served as the academic
program administrator for the HUD Campus Affiliates Program and was a Mellon
Foundation Fellow and visiting lecturer in Cali, Colombia. In 1996 he rejoined
CSUS as dean.
Sheley’s academic and research interests stretch across the fields of
criminology and sociology, and include specific areas such as social control,
criminal justice policy, sociology of law, medical sociology, cross-cultural
health and violence research.
