Capital Public Radio received double honors from Public Radio News Directors Inc. during a recent ceremony in New Orleans. CPR returned to California with a first-place award in the Best Documentary category and a second-place for Best Series, both produced by the KXJZ news department.

CPR is an affiliate of Sacramento State, operating a network of seven radio stations with studios located on the campus.

Documentary winner, Dina’s Diary, was produced by Paul Conley. It offers a rare, full-circle glimpse into breast cancer as experienced by Dina Howard, a mother of two children. Judges said the program “characterizes public radio at its most authentic and human level,” CPR News Director Joe Barr says. Visit www.capradio.org/news/specials/dinasdiary/ for more information.

The four-part series, All About Bonds, was produced by Marianne Russ and Jenny O’Mara to explore just what a state bond was, how it worked and explain its impact, Barr says. For additional information on the series, go to www.capradio.org/news/specials/bonds/.

The entries bested programs from larger public radio stations in San Francisco, Boston and New York, Barr says.
