Sacramento State’s new bookstore is open for business, with more books, more supplies, more caps and T-shirts, and more space for all of it.

The new store opened early Monday, July 30, after staff spent a long weekend moving all the materials to the new location. A formal grand opening is scheduled for Sept. 12. Students, faculty and staff will hold a family event at the store on Aug. 30.

Visitors are greeted by a center of 53,000 square-feet of space, compared to 28,000 square-feet at the old store. “The much-needed new facility presents a more polished image and underscores our commitment to support students, faculty and the academic mission of the University,” says Matt Altier, executive director of University Enterprises Inc.

“The architectural features in the interior—the drop ceilings, the spotlights, the natural and ambient lighting—are all very professional,” adds David Levy, UEI’s director of marketing services.

The operation is a partnership between University Enterprises, the non-profit arm of the University that oversees retail and business development, and Follett Higher Education Group, a family-owned bookstore-managing company with more than 700 campus bookstores across the country.

Along with textbooks and course packs, students will find everything they need for their educational experience, including classroom and lab supplies such as bottles of paint, stethoscopes and computer accessories. Chairs and tables are located around the shelves and displays, giving students places to relax and leaf through a book or magazine. A Java City coffee house is under construction in a corner of the first floor.

“The new bookstore, along with the University Union facility, make this a welcoming first-stop destination on campus,” Levy says. “The impression that a bookstore gives our visitors and guests is reflective of our vibrant campus culture and delivers an image of pride and community that represents the best ideals of the higher education institution that is Sacramento State.”
