Advisory - President’s welcome, residence hall move-in signal start of
semester
Sacramento State
President Alexander Gonzalez will give the traditional fall welcome and “State
of the University” address this Thursday, Aug. 26, just as students begin
moving into the campus residence halls. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 30.
This week offers numerous opportunities for media coverage:
President Gonzalez’ “State of the University”
address is at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26 in the University Union Ballroom.
He’ll talk about planning and accomplishments related to the University’s
“Destination 2010” initiative to transform Sacramento State into
a destination campus, successes such as the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials,
and new projects in the works.
Students will begin moving their belongings into the residence
halls at 9 a.m., Thursday. The five halls on the north side of campus house
about 1,100 students. Shortly after the start of the semester, the campus
will choose from among a number of proposals to replace them with new campus
apartments to house as many as 5,000 students. The first of those halls could
be ready for occupancy in 2007.
Forty-four new Sacramento State faculty members are on campus
all week getting oriented to campus, preparing for classes and meeting their
new colleagues.
The campus is expecting about the same number of students
as a year ago – about 28,500. State budget shortfalls prevented enrollment
growth this fall, but as many as 600 additional students will be accepted
in the spring because the cuts were not as severe as expected.
