Sacramento State purchases 25-acre CYA facility,
plans ‘village’ for faculty and staff
Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez announced today
that the University has completed the purchase of a 25-acre parcel near campus,
which will be used to develop affordable and attainable housing for faculty
and staff.
In his annual Fall Welcome to the campus community, Gonzalez said the University
needs to build housing to help recruit top faculty and staff to an area with
fast-rising housing costs.
The land is located on Ramona Avenue just south of Folsom Blvd., and less than
a mile from the main campus. It is a former California Youth Authority facility
and falls within the City of Sacramento’s South 65th Street Area Plan,
which seeks to spur development of a walkable, mixed-use district.
The site was formally acquired by the University over the summer after nearly
two years of negotiations with CYA and the state’s Department of General
Services.
University Enterprises, the non-profit business entity of Sacramento State,
spearheaded the deal, paying $2.3 million for the land before transferring it
to the University. The “University Village” project will be developed,
and eventually managed, by an arm of University Enterprises.
Prices will be controlled through a variety of approaches used at other California
campuses, including California State University, Monterey Bay and University
of California, Irvine.
