Campus to host National Hispanic
Heritage Month activities
California
State University, Sacramento will host events ranging from traditional folklorico
dance to slam poetry in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept.
15 through Oct. 15.
The campus events, all free and open to the public, join others nationwide in
honoring the achievements of the country’s more than 38 million Hispanics,
more than 32 percent of whom live in California, according to the U.S. Census
Bureau.
A
photo exhibit by Sacramento Bee photojournalist José Luis Villegas
kicks off the month, opening Monday, Sept. 15 in the University Library. It’s
followed the next day by the Celebración del Dieciséis de Septiembre
(16 Sept. Celebration), marking Mexico’s fight for independence, at 11 a.m.
in the University Union’s Serna Plaza. The event features an address from
Diana Fuentes-Michel, executive director of the California Student Aid Commission.
Also on Tuesday, slam poets Alixa Garcia and Naima Penniman, known as “Climbing
Poetree,” present a multimedia performance on the effects of the War on
Drugs on the Americas at 2 p.m. in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.
Other events include a presentation by editorial cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz at noon
Monday, Sept. 22 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium, and a performance by
the RAICES Ballet Folklorico at noon on Friday, Oct. 3 in the University Union
Redwood Room. The month closes with a screening of the film Frida, starring Salma
Hayek as the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, at noon Tuesday, Oct. 14
in the University Library Women’s Resource Center.
