The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing and the football team is in action. That means homecoming is just around the corner.
Sacramento State will celebrate its annual homecoming and Herky’s birthday Oct. 7-13. The University will host a variety of activities including the annual group photo of the campus community, a noon pop/rock concert and Filipino music and dancing.
The big event this year is the 60th birthday for Herky the lovable but sometimes changing school mascot. Herky has gone through numerous looks since its inception in 1947. The current Herky was introduced in 2000. To celebrate his birthday, Herky will give away two iPods for the best video tribute to him and uploaded to YouTube. Contest details are available at ww.csus.edu/Herky.
At noon, Monday, Oct. 8, another page will go in the Sacramento State photo album when it continues its long-running tradition of staging a group swarm photo of students, staff and faculty in the Library Quad. The photo is used in University publications and on the website as the “face of the campus.”
Musical entertainment that week includes a concert by the indie pop/rock group Radio Astronomy, noon, Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the University Union Serna Plaza, and a cultural demonstration of Filipino music and dance by the Ifugao Music and Dance Ensemble of Banaue, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in the University Union Ballroom.
Homecoming is not just for current students, it’s a celebration of all Sacramento State students. Graduates from 1949 to 1958 will be on campus again for a Golden Grads reunion and luncheon, 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Alumni Center. A tour of the Hornet Bookstore follows. Cost for the luncheon is $30 per person. RSVP by Oct. 3 to Alumni Affairs, 278-4899.
Homecoming is also the time for the Stinger Golf Classic. This year’s tournament is 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Woodcreek Golf Course. The event tends to sell out, so reservations should be made early to guarantee a spot for the shotgun start. Call the Athletics Department, 278-4263 to reserve a spot.
The week of activities wraps up with the football game Sacramento State vs. Montana at 2:05 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13. Before the game, the University will hold its Homecoming Festival and tailgating party, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Alumni Center parking lot. Bring your own food or purchase food from vendors. Activities include live music by Mumbo Gumbo and the Sacramento State Marching Band. A kid’s zone will feature jump houses, a balloon artist and carnival games. Pre-schoolers from the Children’s Center will form a Herky Birthday Parade and wind through the tailgate area, ending at the kid’s zone.
