Journalists honor the best in their business

Sacramento State’s Center for California Studies and the Sacramento Press Club have announced the winners in the 13th annual California Journalism awards.

The awards were established to encourage and reward excellence in the reporting of California state government and politics.

This years awards:

The John Jacobs Award for print special feature or enterprise reporting went to John Hill and Andrew McIntosh of The Sacramento Bee for their story “Bidding for CHP Pistols Faulted.”

The John Jacobs Award for print daily coverage went to Shane Goldmacher for his Capitol Weekly story, “NAACP’s Huffman Assailed for Tobacco, Telecom Payments.”

Marianne Russ and Jenny O’Mara of Capital Public Radio received the excellence in radio reporting for “All About Bonds.”

For excellence in television reporting, Kevin Riggs of KCRA received an award for “Governor Schwarzenegger’s Makeover in Terms of his Public Image ... Following a Politically Disastrous Special Election in 2005.”

The Katharine M. MacDonald Award for excellence in student journalism went to Alia Wilson and Daniel Zarchy for their story, “Toeing the Line,” University of California, Santa Cruz.

The recipients will be honored at a Sept. 27 luncheon at the Sterling Hotel in Sacramento that features a keynote address by Lance Williams, a reporter with the San Francisco Chronicle who covered the BALCO steroids case and is the co-author of Game of Shadows.
