Local law enforcement officials have announced plans for a stepped-up presence at tomorrow's Causeway Classic football game at Sacramento State in an effort to reduce alcohol-related incidents. The game between the Sacramento State Hornets and the UC Davis Aggies begins at 2:05 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24 at Hornet Stadium.
At a news conference on the campus today, officials from the University, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the California Highway Patrol and other agencies described Saturday's "Avoid the Capital 12" effort. Officers representing 12 area agencies will be patrolling the parking lots and streets surrounding the University, enforcing alcohol-related laws against driving under the influence and consumption of alcohol by minors.
Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez said the enforcement effort is part of a larger educational campaign to address alcohol-related issues with students. He encouraged fans to enjoy the game, but to do so responsibly.
The University has also put additional measures in place to ensure the safety and comfort of the fans. Tailgate rules have been modified and additional ticket booths have been set up to accommodate the large crowds the event traditionally attracts. A list of tailgating policies can be found at www.hornetsports.com.
The "Avoid the 12" participants include Sacramento State Police, California Highway Patrol, Citrus Heights Police, Elk Grove Police, Folsom Police, Galt Police, Isleton Police, Rancho Cordova Police, Sacramento City Police, Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Sacramento Sheriff’s Department and UC Davis Police. Alcoholic Beverage Control will also participate.
The program is funded by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
