Fashion show fosters higher education

Dr. Wangari Maathai On the catwalk—Michelle Simmons, a Sacramento State Guardian Scholar, models Macy’s clothing in the 2006 Foster Youth Education Fund Fashion Show.

The Foster Youth Education Fund will be holding its sixth annual fashion show, “Dancin’ in the Streets,” Sunday, Sept. 30 in Sacramento State’s University Union Ballroom at 2 p.m.

The Foster Youth Education Fund is a non-profit organization which provides educational grants for college bound youths released from the foster care system in the Sacramento area. The fashion show is the only event in which funds are raised for the educational grants that will be distributed.

In 2006, FYEF teamed up with Sac State’s Guardian Scholars program, which is designed to help foster youth who want to attend Sac State. FYEF donated $20,000 of last year’s fashion show event earnings to the Guardian Scholars Program. That money was earmarked for scholarships, Guardian Scholars program director Joy Salvetti-Wolfe says.

“Our goal is to really facilitate the students experience here,” says Salvetti-Wolfe. “That way they won’t have to worry about housing, health care and financial aid; they can focus on their studies.”

The fashion show also features the foster youth as the runway models in the fashion show.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the youth to see a college campus, strut their stuff and work together to build their self confidence,” says FYEF president Joni Pitcl.

Tickets can be purchased at the event for $25 per adult and $15 for students and children five and older.

For more information on the fashion show and tickets, contact the Foster Youth Education Fund at (916) 335-5485 or e-mail fyef@comcast.net. For media assistance, contact Sacramento State’s Public Affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
