Series paints picture of creative process, fine art

Sacramento State continues its tradition of art appreciation and education with Art After Noon, an innovative program that explores the world of fine art through a series of lectures, demonstrations, collection tours and studio visits.

The Fall 2006 Art After Noon program kicks off with lectures featuring Sacramento State art professors. Professor Elaine O’Brien will launch the series with a set of lectures focusing on the role friendships play in artistic creativity and how they have inspired the works of famous artists.

The pendulum swings from artists to art houses with seminars presented by Professor Catherine Turrill that take participants on a virtual tour through four of the most renowned museums in the world. The focus of the series will be on the buildings and principal works of art they hold, with an emphasis on sculpture and painting.

Participants can also get a first-hand look at artists in their studios in the Collector’s Series through tours of three sculptors’ personal studios. Local artists Robert Brady, Mike Riegel and Annabeth Rosen will open up their studios and give participants a chance to see their creative environment as well as their current work.

The final lecture of the series, “Flower Art Connection,” features renowned floral designer Alisa de Jong-Stout. De Jong-Stout will contrast traditional and contemporary design techniques and tell how she creates her designs by relating them to current sculpture.

The series ends with a tour to the di Rosa Preserve in Napa. The gallery houses the di Rosa art collection, which consists primarily of art created in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 20th century.

Phil Hitchcock, director of Sacramento State’s School of the Arts and Library Gallery says, “We wanted to bring the arts in the community in an involved and interactive process in which an audience would be able to go to studios and see different artists’ energy and enthusiasm.”

Art After Noon is co-presented by the Sacramento State Library and Spare Time, Inc. in conjunction with the Library Gallery and Friends of the Library.

The Collector’s Series
