Sacramento State marketing professor Craig Kelley will discuss
criticism of business education and the challenges of making business classes
matter when he delivers the annual John C. Livingston Lecture at 3 p.m., Tuesday,
Nov. 2 in the University Union Ballroom.
Kelley’s talk, “Structuring Business Education to Meet the Needs
of Business Practitioners,” will explore various critiques that business
education isn’t linked very well to business practice. Kelley will make
a case that business schools need to change both their academic programs and
the way they operate.
The talk will be followed by a reception.
The Livingston Lecture is among the most prestigious recognitions of academic
excellence at California State University, Sacramento. It is named in honor
of the late Jack Livingston, a respected Sacramento State government professor
and faculty leader from 1954 to 1981. Livingston is remembered as an inspiration
to both faculty and students.
The annual lecture recognizes a faculty member who has played an active role
in the life of the University and shown a strong commitment to students, while
remaining active in creative and scholarly activities. It is organized by the
Faculty Senate.
Kelley, who came to Sacramento State in 1985, is the only professor to receive
the Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Business Administration twice.
He’s known for helping students land jobs, both through his ties to business
and by teaching real-world skills such as making sales on the golf course.
