Geology Club rocks on with annual auction
Minerals and other collectables that are a cut above the rest will available to the highest bidder at the Sacramento State Geology Club’s third annual Rock Auction on Friday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Alumni Center.
The students received donations of rocks, mineral and fossil samples from collectors and dealers throughout Northern California. “One of our more exceptional pieces up for auction is a polished geode, nine inches in diameter,” says Professor Dave Evans, chair of the Geology Department. “Other donations include pieces of polished, petrified wood and a map of all the mountain ranges over the world done two years before Mount Whitney was discovered. It’s in great condition.”
There will be more than 100 items for the silent auction and 20 items in thelive auction. A no-host bar and food will be available, as well as Geology Club t-shirts and other club gear. There will also be special activities for kids and door prizes, which include wines from local vineyards.
Last year’s Rock Auction raised $5,000, which the students used to pay for club activities and travel expenses for geology field trips.
