Vocal Jazz teams up with Rhiannon
California State University, Sacramento Vocal Jazz is teaming up
with singer/songwriter Rhiannon for their fall performance at 8
p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 in the Music Recital Hall.
Rhiannon is long-time collaborator with Bobby McFerrin. She brings
a potent blend of jazz and vocal improvisation along with her musical
ensemble Bowl Full of Sound which combines vocals, keyboard and
piano.
Vocal Jazz will open with songs that include Dizzy Gillespie's "Jump
Did Le Ba," and Paul Simon's "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright,"
as well as standards like "The Best Things Happen While You're
Dancing," and "It's Alright With Me."
Last year, CSUS Vocal Jazz was chosen to perform at the Conference
of American Choral Directors Association in Honolulu. "We were
featured on opening night of the conference and many opportunities
are opening up for us because of that recognition," says Julie
Adams, director of Vocal Jazz. "This concert with Rhiannon
will bring a whole different sense of improvisation to the performance."
Vocal Jazz plans to perform at the Columbia Jazz Festival and Reno
Jazz Festival during the spring semester.
Tickets for the Vocal Jazz performance are $8 general and $5 for
students and seniors, and are available at the CSUS ticket office
at 278-4323, or at the door one hour before the performance.
Media assistance is available by contacting the CSUS public affairs
office at 278-6156.
