CSUS presents Bobby Shew and all that jazz
Renowned
trumpeter Bobby Shew blows through California State University,
Sacramento at 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7 to play a concert with
the CSUS Jazz Ensemble. The concert, directed by CSUS music
professor Steve Roach, also features the award-winning CSUS
Vocal Jazz group and takes place in the Music Recital Hall
in Capistrano Hall.
Shew has been performing and recording for more than 30 years
with the likes of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Art Pepper,
Bud Shank, Benny Goodman, the Horace Silver Quintet, Bill
Holman, Della Reese, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Oliver Nelson,
Bill Berry, Juggernaut, and Terry Gibbs.
In addition to being a sideman, Shew has also recorded many
of his own albums. Several of these received very high accolades
including his albums "Outstanding In His Field"
which was nominated for a Grammy in 1980, and "Heavy
Company" which was awarded the Grammy for Jazz Album
Of The Year in 1983.
Shew is also actively involved in the educational system,
including conducting clinics and master classes at high school
and college campuses throughout the world. He is a member
of the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild
and has acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International
Association of Jazz Educators for 16 years.
