Opera classics review hits new high note
Classic scenes from celebrated opera favorites such as La Bohème and The Marriage of Figaro will take a modern twist in "A Slice of Life," an opera review in-the-round from the Sacramento State music department that will debut at 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8 in the Playwrights' Theatre in Shasta Hall and continues through Dec. 10.
Performed in the circular Playwrights' Theatre, an uncommon stage for operatic performances, "A Slice of Life" attempts to establish an intimate, emotional connection between the music and characters in each scene and the audience. The 23 students in the cast will don black and white costumes with appropriate props to identify characters.
"The focus is not on the operas or the characters themselves, but on the issues and emotions the characters deal with," says director and faculty member John Philpott, a Sac State alumnus. "The themes transcend time and location and are something that everyone can relate to."
Other scenes are taken from renowned operas such as The Elixir of Love, Lakmé and Fidelio, with 20th century works that include Sir John in Love,The Old Maid and the Thief and Der Rosenkavalier.
Tickets are $8 general and $5 for students and seniors. They are available through the Sacramento State Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323 or Tickets.com.
