Trades union contributions to support Recreation Center

Signaling their strong support for the signature building in President Alexander Gonzalez’ Destination 2010 plan, campus members of the State Employees Trades Council (SETC)-United have pledged to donate nearly $20,000 over the next two years to help build the Recreation, Wellness and Events Center. They are hopeful that they are leading the way and that others on campus will “step up and join us,” said Mike Mullen, job steward.

Members voted this month to support the President by establishing a gifting program for the project. They hope their commitment will inspire others, including those from the community, to help make the building a reality.
Mullen said the 58 campus members who represent the trades, including plumbers, electricians, painters and carpenters, see the campus situation on both a daily and long-term basis. He said the members were willing to “dig deep” because they feel that the new Recreation Center will be a cornerstone for building the campus for the future.

“This means so much to us to step up and contribute. We think what the President is doing is the right thing. We think that this is the right approach and that we should be contributing to the future of the campus,” said Mullen speaking on behalf of his members.

He said the donation “reflects the personal dedication each member has to this University and a commitment to join the President in helping move this University forward over the next 10 years.”

He said the campus needs good students, faculty and facilities to draw the finest individuals to the University.
Gonzalez said, “This is deeply appreciated. Equally important is the symbolism. It means a lot to others on the campus that they are willing to step up for the future of the University.”

Gonzalez has pledged to raise $23 million in private donations before a student fee to support the effort kicks in. He has raised more than $10 million to date, with the lead gift from philanthropists Alex and Faye Spanos.

Gonzalez said receiving the gift from an on-campus group underscores for the community the support and need for the facility. He said he is very grateful to the SETC-United for their farsighted outlook and the contribution.
